Experiments

Experimenting with type
Looking at different ways of type and how i can create an interesting illustration for my campaign slogan. I sketched out in biro the words "Respect for young mums" and then scanning it in. Once scanning it gets this lovely grey shade over the letters that i love. I cute out the letters and darkened the edges in order to get a deeper darker sketchy effect around the letters. Although its just a starting point i like the look of this it gives of a young feel which is what i want when talking about young parents.

Logo

Mother and Father logo
I have also designed a logo that is based on the name Mother and Father, but also incorporating the idea of young parents. At first i began by sketching out a range of ideas and playing our with all the letters, then it began to develop into the idea of the M forming a heart shape and the rest being within the heart as well as an idea of using the pregnant shape as the letter M. Below are a section of my initial sketches that developed my final logo idea.
I then went onto produce my logo in illustrator. I went along with the idea of the M as the heart and the pregnant ladies shape. I found it hard to get the position of all the letters right within both shapes but after a few sketches and trying out all different compositions i found ones that worked really well.
I really like how they turned out i think the middle logo works best. I think by having the letter M as the heart is shows love as well as representing the mother and father, i put the the & in the middle of the heart so its in the middle of the parents that represents the baby.

Development Work

Typography
I did a range of sketches to see how i could show the words "respect for young mums". I began by making a range of sketches in different styles as well as look at a hand rendered type book for inspiration. I liked the idea of using the shape of a pregnant lady and adding the words from it.

ADD MORE IMAGES OF THE SCANS AND PHOTOCOPIES.

Campaigns

Be a star
This was a website that i found that focused on getting young mothers to breastfeed although its not on the subject im doing it was intresting to see how they had done there campaign and succsessful promoted it. I got alot of images of these glamourous mums holiding there babies which really caught my attention. I like how they used photography in order to frount there campaign. They are very well known and have got there advertisements in popular papers and magazines. It gave me lots of ideas to carry out and think about.
Research
I then gatherd a range of articles and information, i highlighted and underline all the infromation that i found relevent. I was shocked by what i had found out. I started this project with the idea of showing the journey that young parents go through and the daily stigma they have to deal with but after researching indepth i realised the issue is alot bigger than this and my idea is starting to develop. I found out that it wasn't just the general public but professionals such as midwifes and doctors were also treating young mothers differently and in some situations had physically abused and verbally abused them. I also found that the fathers of the children are never thought of in the same way as the mother, the mums get called names but the fathers get away with it and in nearly all cases the abuse was all aimed at the mother of the child. I also found that there are a few campaigns out there that are trying to get respect for you mums and one of these is http://prymface.yolasite.com/ which was a website set up and has lots of stories, facts and intresting links to explore.

After doing all this research i am now thinking of making this a wider scale thing and starting to look at professionals in the workplace treating young mothers differently and trying to do a mini campaign to gain respect for young mothers. I think i want to do a big poster with images of young parents and there children and something along the lines of "Respect for Young Mums" but make it more snappy. Then they will either be holding a sign with it or i will digitally place it on. I will also interview the parents and do some animations with them in order to portray the truth and there horrific stories. To top that of i want to do something to show the facts as i have found that the facts that everyone assumes such as "They just want a concil house" and "BENEFITS" are total lies and the facts prove this therefore in some way (possibly a book) i want a true and a false section and then the facts down each side but im still unsure how im going to present this in order for the message to get across easily.

I also find interesting the idea that in the past it was okay to have a baby young and there was none of this stigma around it that there is today so the image at the top really stood out to me as a campaign i could do. It is also ironic that the facts say that there were alot more teenage parents in the past than there are today!

Research

Research
Below is a set of images that i have collected from the ywca website. Although these images are a bit cheesy and unprofessional the idea behind them is what i want to convay. I really like the idea of doing a campaign and doing a photoshop of young mums and using a motto like there "Respect for young Mums" but creating it in a lovely illustrative type so its becomes a piece of artwork.
http://old.ywca.org.uk/youngmums/campaign.asp Images that were found on the website which are there campaigns to promote respect for young mums.

Research

Research
I began by looking at articles about teenage parents to see what peoples views were on the subject. As expected the majority were negative. The guardian supplied me with alot of articels that talked about teenage parents from all views. From the guaridan i started to see a few inresting stories, there is the side of the teenager that is steryotyped but there is also a factual side which states why this is. Poverty and teenaged mums are directly linked aswell as education and by reading these articles i realised it was a larger scale issue than just young parents being stereotyped. I then came across this article about young mothers and how they are sterotypes, with some witness statments and link to a website. The article is at the link below.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2004/sep/08/childrensservices.guardiansocietysupplement?INTCMP=SRCH From this i got a view of what it is liked to be named called and treated differently just because of your age your pregnant. It then took me to this website http://old.ywca.org.uk/youngmums/ this website is set up to help young mums that are facing this daily abuse and to help them with everyday tasks. Its moto is to get resepect for young mums which is exacally what my aim is for my project. The site has alot of intresting witness statments, facts and images that i have collected. It had a lot of sources that were really helpful to me and started to give me the idea of a campaign.

Final Major Project
Initial ideas
The theme of our final major project is parents we are allowed to interpret this and go down any path we chose. I have decided to focus mine around the idea of young parents and the challenges they go through. I want to focus on the journey that they make from being a teenager to being a mum/dad. I have chosen this theme because my sister has recently been on this journey and i have seen the change within her and how she has adapted to become a wonderful mother. I would like to show and portray young parents in a positive way, they are perceived in a certain way to make them look shameful, immature and looked down upon. My initial ideas on how i will visually do this is to take real life situations and create videos of an interview with me asking a range of young parents about there experience and how they have grown. As well as creating photographs and posters around the theme. I will also have a range of people being interviewed who think young parents are shameful and i will let the young parents show that this is not true and they are great parents.
This website gave me some ideas as they interview a young parent and she talks breifley about the stereotyping and how people look down on her.
http://www.thesite.org/sexandrelationships/familyandfriends/beingaparent/youngmums
There was also an article from a young mother talking about her issues and her point of view
http://www.thesite.org/community/reallife/rants/respectforyoungmums
I am going to research with face to face interviews with my sister and with other young parents in order to get an initial idea of how i can develop the information. I will also find articles on the internet, look for books in the library or magazines about young parents and what advice they give as well as information on how they are perceived.
